The Most Important Bitcoin Denominations

A bitcoin (BTC) is most commonly expressed in one of three denominations:

  • bitcoin – BTC – (1 bitcoin)
  • millibitcoin – mBTC – (1 thousandth of a bitcoin)
  • microbitcoin – uBTC – (1 millionth of a bitcoin)

Additionally, there is a fourth, much smaller denomination called a “satoshi” which is equal to a one hundred millionth of a single bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). There is no established currency symbol for a satoshi although it is sometimes abbreviated to sat or simply s.

Here is an easy chart showing the different denominations with some example bitcoin prices:

Unit Value in BTC @ $1,000 per BTC @ $2,000 per BTC @ $5,000 per BTC
BTC 1 $1,000 $2,000 $5,000
mBTC 0.001 $1.00 $2.00 $5.00
uBTC 0.000001 $0.001 $0.002 $0.005
satoshi 0.00000001 $0.00001 $0.00002 $0.00005

Your course is excellent… just started and tried to signup with coinbase but due to misunderstanding how to get the photoID up had to re-start and finally got to the verification of the amounts deposited and was presented with error message saying there had been too many re-directs…very frustrating…

    Cheers
